Volunteer Internship Opportunities

Spring/Summer 2010

 Family Law Internship

Metro Volunteer Lawyers has volunteer internship positions available within the Family Law Court Program (FLCP).  The FLCP assists low-income clients with Dissolution of Marriage (divorce) and Allocation of Parental Responsibilities (custody) cases.

Because MVL handles a high volume of cases, interns will experience all stages of the process, from the initial filing of a case to the final Permanent Orders Hearing.  Interns will become familiar with all standard DOM & APR documents, as well as the basic procedural framework for these cases.  Interns will also attend our Clinic dates at the Denver, Adams, Arapahoe & Jefferson County Courthouses, and will have the opportunity to interact with volunteer attorneys and court staff.

Tasks will include:

·         Interacting with clients and assisting them in completing legal documents.

·         Managing case status & scheduling using legal database software.

·         Filing documents with the various Courts

·         Researching & arranging for Service of Process

·         Attending Court dates in each county (4 days per month).  Observe mediations and hearings.  Assist as needed.

Metro Volunteer Lawyers is a non-profit organization.  This is an unpaid, volunteer internship.  Hours are flexible, though a commitment of 8 hours per week for at least 1 semester is encouraged.

Please submit a resume and a brief, informal statement describing your interest in family law and your availability to:

Veronica Mabry, Esq.

You may obtain, from the Office of Attorney Registration, a blank form for the Dean's certification. You will also need to provide the name of the supervising attorney and the anticipated graduation date. You must be working for an attorney in the public sector, i.e., the Public Defender's Office or District Attorney's Office.
