Helping low-income Coloradans find solutions to civil legal problems

Why can't MVL help me?

Unfortunately, we are not able to help everyone who seeks assistance from us.  The reasons are many, including the following:

The demand for our help is huge.  We simply cannot help everyone who calls on us, and we must assist clients on a first-come, first-served basis.

Your legal issue may not fall under the types of cases that we accept.

We may have a conflict of interest.

We are always looking for more volunteer lawyers, but may not be able to find a lawyer who can help you when you need one.

Unfortunately, if your income and resources exceed our financial eligibility guidelines, we will not be able to provide you with free or low-fee legal assistance.

If one of these situations applies, where can you go? Here are some suggestions.

Bankruptcy Clinic  Volunteer attorneys from the Denver Bar Association present personal bankruptcy clinics for debtors who have filed a case without the aid of an attorney and for debtors who are thinking of filing a case without the aid of an attorney. These clinics are presented by trustees and consumer bankruptcy attorneys, and address such issues as credit implications, what to expect at a meeting of creditors, the role of the trustee, the duties of the debtor, reaffirmation, discharge and dischargeability, adversary proceedings, and other crucial information. You may be able to get questions answered or legal advice through one of the various media-sponsored "Call-A-Lawyer" programs, such as "LawLine 9" (click here for their schedule).

You may be able to find a lawyer who will represent you on a reduced fee or payments over time basis by calling lawyers who you learn about from friends, the yellow pages, or who are listed on the Metro Lawyer Referral Service website.

We regret that we cannot help everyone who contacts us. If we cannot represent you, we hope you find someone who can and wish you success in resolving your legal problem.
